Build the Truck. Build the Business. Know Your Numbers.

From the first truck decision to freight, cash flow and running a real business.

Miles are not income. Profitable miles are income.

Getting the truck is only the beginning.

Profitable Miles — The Owner-Operator Business Manual is a practical 184-page digital manual for new and future owner-operators who want to understand the business behind the truck—not simply how to get one moving.

It begins before the truck is fully committed and follows the operation through equipment decisions, startup money, business setup, insurance, authority, compliance, freight, paperwork, payment and the financial decisions that determine whether the miles actually make sense.

This manual is built to help drivers approach owner-operator trucking as a business rather than simply a driving job with larger expenses.

Understand What the Truck Actually Has to Earn

A truck can stay busy and still fail to produce the money the business needs.

Profitable Miles explains how fixed expenses, fuel, maintenance, repairs, downtime, deadhead, carrier percentages and other operating costs change what a load is really worth.

Instead of focusing only on the rate printed on a rate confirmation, the manual helps you look at the entire movement of the truck—including the unpaid miles required to get into position, the time involved, and the expenses that continue whether freight is strong or slow.

The goal is not to give every owner-operator one magic rate or one perfect cost-per-mile number. Different trucks, freight, markets and business arrangements produce different numbers.

The goal is to help you understand what belongs in the calculation so you can build your own numbers around your own operation.

Build the Business Behind the Truck

Owner-operator trucking involves much more than choosing a tractor and finding freight.

The manual walks through the systems behind the operation: deciding how you will operate, choosing and preparing equipment, setting up the business identity, banking and bookkeeping, planning for taxes, understanding insurance, working through federal registration and preparing the truck and driver to begin operating.

It also explains the difference between operating under your own authority and running under another carrier’s authority, including what the carrier may provide, what you may still be responsible for, how percentage deductions affect the load and why the agreement needs to make financial sense for the operation you are actually building.

From Registration to the First Load

Once the business and equipment begin coming together, the manual moves into the operating side of trucking.

It covers USDOT registration and operating authority, interstate and intrastate operation, IRP, IFTA, UCR, permits, ELD setup and the records that help keep those systems manageable.

Then it follows the truck into freight.

You will work through where freight comes from, evaluating the whole load before accepting it, checking brokers and load information, reading rate confirmations, completing carrier setup, documenting freight at pickup, handling changes or problems during a load, protecting delivery paperwork and making sure the load is properly closed out for payment.

The emphasis throughout the manual is simple: understand what you are agreeing to before the truck, freight or money is already committed.

Real Working Financial Examples

One of the most important sections of Profitable Miles takes the business concepts and puts numbers behind them.

A sample one-truck operation is used to demonstrate how equipment payments, insurance, fuel, maintenance, operating expenses and carrier percentages affect the amount the truck actually needs to gross.

The examples show how to calculate cost per all mile, how deadhead changes the loaded rate required, what a working-day revenue minimum can look like, how repair-heavy months affect otherwise strong revenue and why the cost of a breakdown can extend beyond the repair invoice itself.

These figures are examples—not advertised rates, industry averages or income promises.
They are there to show you how to think through the numbers so you can replace the examples with the actual numbers produced by your own truck.

Built to Be Used, Not Just Read Once

Who This Manual Is For

Profitable Miles is designed for drivers who are seriously considering becoming owner-operators, new owner-operators who are still building their business systems, and operators who already understand how to drive a truck but want a stronger understanding of the business behind it.

It is also useful for someone deciding whether to buy a first truck, comparing carrier arrangements, preparing to obtain authority or trying to determine what the truck really needs to earn before accepting freight.

This is not an income-guarantee program, dispatch service or promise that every owner-operator will reach the same result.
Different equipment, freight, markets, contracts and operating arrangements require different decisions.

What good information can provide is a better understanding of what deserves attention, what needs to be calculated and what should be verified before the decision becomes expensive.

Profitable Miles — Not Just Miles.

You do not need somebody else’s perfect truck, perfect rate or perfect business plan.

You need to know what your truck costs, what your business requires and whether the miles in front of you actually move that business forward.

Build the truck. Build the business. Know your numbers.
