REGULATORY WATCH
If you pay UCR each year, expect a different number when 2027 registration opens.
FMCSA has finalized an increase in 2027 UCR registration fees under the Unified Carrier Registration program. For the smallest bracket — carriers operating 0–2 commercial motor vehicles — the fee increases from $46 to $55.
That is only a $9 difference for a one-truck operation, so this is not a major new expense by itself. But it is worth knowing ahead of time, especially when renewal season rolls around and the amount on the screen no longer matches what you paid last year.
FMCSA says the new fee schedule represents an average increase of about 20% over the rates used for 2025 and 2026.
WHAT WILL 2027 UCR COST?
The approved 2027 carrier and freight-forwarder fees are:
| Number of vehicles | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 | $46 | $55 |
| 3–5 | $138 | $167 |
| 6–20 | $276 | $333 |
| 21–100 | $963 | $1,163 |
| 101–1,000 | $4,592 | $5,548 |
| 1,001+ | $44,836 | $54,165 |
Brokers and leasing companies will pay $55 for 2027. The official UCR Plan has published the full approved fee schedule.
WHEN DOES 2027 REGISTRATION OPEN?
The 2027 UCR registration portal opens October 1, 2026.
If your operation is required to register under UCR, registration and payment should be completed before January 1, 2027. After that date, the fee is still due and an unregistered operation may be subject to state enforcement.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR A SMALL CARRIER
For most one- and two-truck operations, the practical takeaway is pretty simple:
If you normally pay UCR, plan on $55 instead of $46 for the 2027 registration year.
This is not the kind of increase that changes the economics of running a truck, but it is exactly the kind of small regulatory change that can be easy to miss until you’re staring at a different charge during renewal.
Registration opens October 1, so there is no reason to wait until the end of December to deal with it.
And while you’re already handling renewal, it is a good time to make sure your carrier information is current. The UCR Plan also reminds carriers that changes to company information should be kept current with FMCSA.
For owner-operators and small carriers, UCR is just one of the recurring compliance items that has to stay on the calendar. Registration, inspection requirements, operating authority information and other carrier records all affect whether the business stays current. Exodus covers those issues in our DOT & Compliance resources, while the Mile-Proven Center brings together broader owner-operator, truck, maintenance and business resources.
THE EXODUS TAKEAWAY
For a one- or two-truck carrier that is subject to UCR:
2026 fee: $46
2027 fee: $55
Registration opens: October 1, 2026
Complete it by: January 1, 2027
Nothing complicated here — just a change worth knowing before renewal season gets here.
